HOW TO BRING DETAIL INTO SHADOW AREAS

1. Open your picture

2. Go into Window - Show Layers. In the layers menu your picture will be called 'background'.

3. Double click on the blue bit where it says background, and then click OK in the box that comes up asking you if you want to create a new layer. Your pic will now be called layer 0

4. Get hold of layer 0 with the mouse and drag it to the bottom of the layer menu by holding down the left mouse button, and drop it in the icon which is second from right, next to the dustbin, and looks like two pieces of paper, one with the corner turned down

5. You now have two copies of the same layer - layer 0 and layer 0 copy. Layer 0 copy will now be blue.

6. Go into Image - Adjust - Hue/Saturation. Use the middle slider, saturation, to desaturate the picture, by moving the slider all the way to the left

7. Go into Image - Adjust - Invert. This makes it look like a negative

8. Go into Filters - Blur - Gaussian blur and set the slider at the bottom at somewhere round about eight to ten

9. In the layers menu, which you probably still have open, (if not, open it again, via Window - Show Layers) you will see a window at the top left which will have 'normal' in it. Click on the arrow to the right of 'normal' to make the menu drop down and select 'soft light'.

10. Watch the miracle happen.
