This 'module' introduces the participant to the concept of illustrating a 'story in pictures' whether by a single image or through a series of related images.
What equipment to choose and films to use.
Narrative content of the scene is examined and the student is introduced 'image analysis' and 'semiotics'.

The works of the 'masters of the genre' are reviewed.
The course also covers the conventions of composition as applied to the 'Documentary Style'.

Developing a personal expression and viewpoint is discussed. Methods of 'changing the emphasis' and principles of 'cropping' are also featured.

The participant is encouraged to select a theme and produce a set of pictures based upon it. Through discussion, practice and illustration the student is encouraged to improve his/her critical skills and thus improve picture making.
